HOMELAND WAR MUSEUM DUBROVNIK

Historical museum

The exhibition Dubrovnik in the Homeland War 1991-1995 was installed in Fort Imperial, which the French constructed on Srđ Hill in 1812 and dedicated to Napoleon I.

During the Homeland War, the fort was on the frontline of Dubrovnik’s defence and served as the command headquarters for the Croatian Army’s 163rd Dubrovnik Brigade. It became a symbol of the City’s heroic defence. The exhibition was opened in 2008 as the first phase of the project for the future permanent display of the Homeland War Museum Dubrovnik. Fort Imperial awaits a comprehensive renovation.

The exhibition is on display in the fort’s ground level and consists of four thematic units: ‘The Fall of the Ragusan Republic and the History of Fort Imperial’; ‘The Serbian-Montenegrin Aggression in 1991’; ‘Days of Victory – Lifting the Blockade of Dubrovnik and Liberating Southern Croatia’; and ‘Human Casualties and the Destruction of Civilian Buildings and Cultural Monuments in the Dubrovnik Area’.

It presents the course of the Homeland War in the wider Dubrovnik environs from the onset of the Serbian-Montenegrin aggression in 1991, the victorious advance of the Croatian Army to the internationally recognized southern border of the Republic of Croatia, and the return of refugees and displaced persons to the formerly occupied territories up to the end of the war in 1995.

Original documents, artistic and documentary photographs from the Homeland War, arms, explosive ordnance, components of military gear, wartime banners of military units, authentic recordings and video materials, military maps, trophy weapons collected by soldiers and other memorabilia are all on exhibit.
